Who Knows It (WKI) is a Black girls' empowerment team at an urban high school. The team conducted a research project that examined the causes for the low number of Black girls pursuing STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) education. The research findings were used to create a freshman orientation and a public service announcement. Participation in the project provided team members with an opportunity to develop and demonstrate critical thinking, leadership and specialized skills.
Books Not Bars is a youth-led project that used digital media for communication and activism. The youth team conducted research with their peers to examine the school-to-prison pipeline. They worked collaboratively with a team of girls who were coders to develop a virtual gaming application that navigates youth though real-life situations. Participation in the project promoted critical thinking, leadership and specialized skills.
